Here are a few tips from our friends up in South Bend with Unity Gardens
on what you can do this February if you are itching to get started in the
garden. Check out their page HERE. They have
a lot of neat programs going on.
What to start in
February
According to the USDA
the last frost date in Indianapolis is April 30th with a 10% chance of frost
after that date. I tend to feel more comfortable waiting a little longer to put
my warm weather plants in the ground. If you are starting seeds indoors,
make sure you have a warm place to start them and good, intense light for them
once they germinate.
Onions:
Get those onion seeds
growing! Start onion seeds 12 weeks before last frost date and transplant them
outdoors when soil can be worked and weather won't dip below 20 degrees.
Suggested
varieties: Sweet White Walla, Red Creol, Yellow Spanish
Peppers:
Peppers can be
started indoors in mid February. Peppers take up little space in the
garden and can produce high yields when planted close together. Plant as many
different varieties as possible. They come small, big, hot, mild, and an array
of different colors.
Suggested
varieties: California Wonder, Early Jalapeno, Sweet Banana
Tomatoes:
I also like to start
tomatoes indoors in mid February; the most popular garden vegetable! Growing
tomatoes is not only fun, but treats you to some of the best tasting fruits in
the world. Tomatoes come in many colors, shapes, tastes, and sizes. Grow a few
varieties every year to discover your favorites!
Some
Favorites: Brandywine & Cherokee Purple. This year we are
trying Berkley Tie Dye
Lettuce, Kale,
Mustards,Spinach:
These leafy greens
like growing better in cool weather; like the in the 50's, and will even take
light to heavy frost. The flavor is even better during the cooler
weather!
Mostly plant these
directly in the garden in early May. You can also start some in late
February to plant directly in the garden in mid-April and get a jump start on
the season.
