Fertilizing Policy

SHarP follows organic gardening principles which apply to fertilizers as well.

Improving the soil through compost and soil amendments such as worm castings, mushroom compost or bagged organic soils should always be the first course of action if you would like to improve the soil in your plot, especially if the soil level is low. Cover crops are also an option for gardeners who will be returning the following season. These can add organic matter and nutrients to the soil and are simply cut down and turned into the soil before they set seed. Products containing manure should be well composted and not have a strong odor at the time they are added to the soil. During fall cleanup, our on-site compost is added to the beds.

Organic fertilizers may also be used to give your soil a boost, although they do less for long term soil health. Products will say "organic" on the packaging. They are usually made of chicken by-products and have relatively low N-P-K values. Granular or liquid fertilizers are acceptable. Follow recommended application guidelines. If you have any questions, please ask.
